There are many ways to describe or represent functions: by a formula, by an algorithm that computes it, by a plot or a graph. A table of values is a common way to specify a function in statistics, physics, chemistry, and other sciences. A function may also be described through its relationship to other functions, for example, as the inverse function or a solution of a differential equation. There are uncountably many different functions from the set of natural numbers to itself, most of which cannot be expressed with a formula or an algorithm. Functions with numerical outputs may be added and multiplied, yielding new functions. Collections of functions with certain properties, such as continuous functions and differentiable functions, usually required to be closed under certain operations, are called function spaces and are studied as objects in their own right, in such disciplines as real analysis and complex analysis. In mathematics, the limit of a function is a fundamental concept in calculus and analysis concerning the behavior of that function near a particular input.

It is important for students to manage their time and work by the clock. It is best for students to start with the problems that they are sure they can answer easily. Granted, not all students will make it to Calculus 1, and that's fine. The point here is that you know what subjects you need, then it becomes just a matter of finding the right curriculum to teach those subjects. Start by Identifying the Target College
A lot of the decision-making about curriculums depends upon the college that you want to attend. Typically, each college will have their own set of requirements for incoming students. For example, MIT prefers a strong foundation in calculus. They want their applicants to have gone through at least one level of Calculus in high school before they arrive. Auburn University, however, expects a strong foundation in Algebra I and II with a secondary emphasis being placed on courses like calculus, geometry, statistic analysis, and trigonometry. In the late 1990's the Third International Mathematics and Science Study came out with a report that basically said the United States was failing at instructing mathematics. Sixty to Seventy percent of the problems that groups work on in the CPM curriculum are using material from a previous lesson. The same can be said of the homework problems. This forces students to learn material and remember it rather than just learn it. As an instructor one of the most frustrating things to hear is a student that walks into the next level class and tells the instructor that they were never taught prerequisite material. Teaching is about listening not telling. With this curriculum, to see any success at all, students must continually complete problems with their group that are from yesterday, last week, last month, or six months ago. When they continually revisit that spiral of material, that material gets locked in place in their brains.
While students are working in groups, they are solving challenge problems with their fellow classmates. The instructor is not telling them solution, they are discovering it themselves. A frustration of teaching mathematics is that students claim, "I don't know where to start" when they run into a word problem. With the CPM curriculum, every day students are solving 4-5 word type problems with their group. They quickly learn they have to start a problem, or they will never finish. Because students are learning high level problems and they are continuously using previous knowledge in their problems, the CPM curriculum does not cover as many different standards as a text book would. Students would be able to use this method in a traditional text book. What students are trading the exposure to material for is a problem solving strategy. Students are learning instead that they can attack any problem with the skills they have maintained throughout the class. This problem solving ability is absent in most traditional text books and curriculum. Therefore, it is my opinion that these students should be stronger at handling day to day mathematical problems in a non-academic environment. As instructors, we have all banged our heads on the wall trying to get our students to learn concepts that are so obscure that they are virtually useless. A CPM student could conceivably solve that obscure problem because they have highly developed problem solving skills.

Our first day of training was from an ex-marine Mr. Miller, who I thought does a really fantastic job at delivery the curriculum in an unbiased matter. In fact, I learned just from watching his instruction that he is more comfortable with putting a question back on the poser so that the poser actually answers the question themselves. College Preparatory Math is a project based mathematics curriculum that we will be putting in place at our high school this year. As an instructor, it takes the role of a information deliverer out of the hands of the instructor and turns them into a guide into the wide world of math. Of course the instructor is still responsible for teaching, classroom structure, and direction which is what is expected of a teacher, but there primary role is really create an environment where the students can investigate solutions themselves. The bumps in the road on the first day came from "what if" questions.

I myself asked some "what if" questions as if we were all trying to pigeon hole all classroom instruction into one perfect little model. The solution to all of our "what if" questions was simply answered by Mr. Miller with two different answers. His first matter of fact answer was that he does not make policy for individual cases, with an example of "Congress does not create speeding laws and then spend the next 100 days discussing special cases of people who break those laws." His second answer was even more simplistic. I thought this was an excellent response. After all, changing the way that we teach mathematics, does not mean we should have to sacrifice all aspects of classroom management.
My biggest complaint at this point is the vast amount of material it seems I have to digest and how much this is going to take me out of my classroom comfort zone. The text and resource materials seems to much to handle, but I don't think it is more than any other textbook plan. As far as the comfort zone--I think CPM is going to make me interact with my math students much more than I did in the past. I may not have that luxury of sneaking 10 minutes out of a 85 minute period to finish my grading.
My impression after one day is mostly favorable. I really think that once we get over this first hill and get the curriculum started that we are going to see much better results in mathematical logic and understanding which has precisely been my pet peeve for the past 10 years.

Being an electrician is a rewarding job. It does not matter if you're constructing something new, repairing something broke, or modifying an existing system, when you are done you either have an owner or a customer that is pleased with the work that you have done.
It's best, but not necessary, if you start planning to be an electrician in high school. Take classes in mathematics, physics, and any electrical course your high school offers. Most vocational schools and apprenticeship programs either require a high school diploma or GED.
Enter into an electrician training program either at a local college or a vocational school. Most apprenticeship programs prefer you take these programs before you get into an apprenticeship. Classes will include mathematics, electrical theory, blueprint reading, safety, and electrical shop classes. Next, find and get into an apprenticeship program. Many of the vocational schools will help you find one of these programs. Some states will reduce this by two years if you took the vocational or college classes.
Once the apprenticeship program is completed, sign up and take the state examination. This exam is different in every state, but all states require you to pass this exam before becoming a licensed electrician.

Ever wonder why students who are labeled troublemakers, incorrigibles or educationally challenged in their academic classes begin to do much better in their Career Technical Education classes? Relevancy is the key to better learning.
While teaching my high school classes and interacting with my teenage students and trying to develop their skills, habits, mind set, and work habits; all skills that are conducive to being able to search for, find, apply, secure, and keep a job or go on to higher education; I find that most of these students severely lack any marketable skills needed to either go to college or enter the job market. These students also have high, unrealistic expectations for the salary they want for the work they don't want to do. They struggle in the basic academic areas of reading, writing, and math.

The traditional Vocational Education classes like auto shop, woodshop, print shop, metal shop, and welding shop, etc. was the place to dump the kids who did not do well academically and caused trouble in other classes. Sure, there were a few of us who actually were getting good grades academically and just liked working with our hands in the vocational classes but for the most part the classes were made up of those "incorrigibles". Back then, the "Shop Teachers" were generally not regarded as real teachers unless one of the "real" teachers need their car fixed, some tables or chairs made or some nice programs or invitations printed.
Moving forward about a decade, and now doing my student teaching in a Regional Occupational Program (ROP), not much had changed. There were a few different programs added to the traditional vocational education classes but the students were still the same ones that were not doing well in school and needed credits to graduate. We also had adult classes to help those adults who wanted to start a new career, advance in their current position, get their G.I. benefits, or just wanted to get away from the wife and the "honey-do" list.
Fast forwarding to today, the number of Career Technical Education (CTE) classes (formerly known as Vocational Education classes) has grown to over 140 different programs as published by the California Association Regional Occupational Centers and Programs (CAROCP) but now as it was then, there seems to be a class gap between the "real" teachers who teach in the "Upper Class" academic areas and those who teach in the "Lower Class" career technical areas. The rumors still circulate that those who teach in the vocational areas lack degrees and "real" teaching credentials. It sounds like the vocational instructors are just above Neanderthals in the education evolutionary scheme of things. These urban myths are perpetuated by some in academia who are ignorant of what it currently takes to achieve a CTE Credential or to teach in the ROP. They do not know that all of these programs are being taught by instructors who have a vast amount of practical industry experience, which is one of the main credential requirements, and many have post secondary degrees ranging from Bachelors to Doctorates.
There are also those who actually believe that there shouldn't be any vocational classes because they think it is demeaning to the students of lower social economic background and in essence these classes are telling them they could not be any better than a common laborer. They all seem to ignore the facts that MIT and Cal Tech started out essentially as vocational schools, not to mention Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and Rochester Institute of Technology. Moving back to these CTE students, most of what I found then and it seems to be true now is that these "troublemakers" were not dumb but could not connect the material being taught in the academic classes to what one would need in the "real world" to live, eat and survive. I doubt that any of the math teachers could tell their students, let alone show them, how they would be using Algebra and the Quadratic Equation in the real world to solve real problems. No tangible connection was ever made for these students. This is an aspect of conventional academic classes that Dr. Worley, North Orange County ROP Superintendent, and I believe to be true and is substantiated in the 2006 Longitudinal Study Technical Report by Dr. Douglas E. Mitchell of the School Improvement Research Group at the University of California, Riverside.
All the academic classes teach theory but not in real world terms, that is, how all this information, theories and facts actually relate to doing a job. In the minds of these students there is no relevancy to anything tangible, anything they can see, hear, or touch. As a result of this disconnect, these "troublemakers" will tune out what is being done in the classroom and with all their idle time, start doing things that will disturb the class and instructor and get themselves into trouble. These academic instructors will tell the counselors to get these kids out of their class and put them in auto shop, metal shop or woodshop. No one seemed to understand that these students are not dumb, or mentally challenged, but learn in a different way. The "academics" do not seem to understand that these students learn by working with their hands and actually seeing the relationship between the academic bookwork and how it is used to solve real problems.
After they are "dumped" into one of these vocational classes, many of them will begin to come around after a time and actually attend class, do assignments, do homework, read books and start getting good grades. They are able to do math, improve on their reading, writing, and communication skills as well as begin to develop a professional demeanor.
So how did these incorrigibles and troublemakers begin to do the academic work no one believed they can do? Dr. Worley and I believe if they are shown what they are learning is relevant to actually doing a job, making something work or putting something together correctly their academic work will follow. Again, our beliefs are backed-up by the 2006 Longitudinal Study Technical Report by Dr. Miller. If bringing relevancy into the coursework is the major reason that enables these "incorrigible" students to understand and even excel in the academic areas, is it possible to incorporate it in the regular academic classes and raise the level of achievement for all students? According to two standards adopted by the California State Board of Education; the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards (2005) and California Career Technical Education Framework for California Public Schools (2007), it is the direction our public schools need to go. In these standards, the academic classes are incorporated into career pathways where the spelling, grammar, math, science, reading, writing and compositions all revolve around a specific career pathway so, for instance, if a student is interested in the dental area all the academics would revolve around the dental profession. In this way relevancy is brought into every subject.
But like most government bureaucracy, change is painfully slow and for the most part only the CTE classes have been bringing this relevancy to their students thus the reason for the expansion of CTE programs. Breaking the current educational academic model will be a difficult task as bringing real world relevancy into the academic classrooms would take real world work experience in their area of expertise. To do this the academic teachers would need to have work experience outside of the educational system as part of their requirements to obtain or maintain their credential. Convincing the academic teachers and administrator of this will take years and means changing the structure of the standard credentialing system to the core.

Games do and can work, but beware:
There's an awful lot on the web, but many are low-budget and you don't want your students to perceive math as cheap.
Before we get started, it's helpful to know how math games are constructed and how they function.
Most math games simply add an animation to a math problem in a way that the two are unrelated. A horse jumps because two numbers were added correctly.
There a lots of this type, and the approach does seem to work for training multiplication tables or other basic functions. Timez Attack sets the stage for having created fascinating 3D worlds and a cute little frog for its character that seems as appealing to girls as boys.
Using conceptually disintegrated games for teaching more complex concepts may have some undesirable effects, and may cause a disconnect between the math concept and its meaning.
For deeper concepts, occasionally a game will pop up where the math concept is used in a context where the visuals makes sense. The author(s) of Math Playground, the #1 of the free web-based sites that have multiple games, have put a lot of thought into their work... where the animations frequently match the concept. Lure of the Labyrinth is a blend between the two approaches, and worth a visit for the interesting game design.
Math Snacks, put out by New Mexico State University, aren't really games, but rather videos you watch. But they are really funny, and they really work, teaching basic concepts such as ratios through exceptionally well written animated "shorts".
To take your students even deeper, look for "story-based math games" where the math concept, story and animation are all seamlessly integrated.

It is commonly understood that most children can study for about 10 minutes at a time before losing focus. This applies to math homework as well.

Make Math Real

Fun can be pictures. Draw a picture to illustrate a problem or set of problems. Students can find pictures in magazine that illustrate some of their homework problems, or write a math problem of their own based on a picture they find.
